Indoor rowing is very popular in the western countries and is new entrant in India. The news that has come out now is the Calcutta Rowing Club would be conducting Asian School Indoor Rowing Championships and this would take place from 4th of September 2018 in Kolkata. The superb piece of information is the specially-able children would not be left behind and they would a separate competition for them also. Founded in the year 1858, Calcutta Rowing Club is located in the city of Kolkata. It is one of the oldest rowing clubs present outside United Kingdom. It is amazing to note that this club was started when East India Company was rattled by the revolt against the British in 1857. It is brought out that about 2 lakh students belonging to India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan etc would be making their presence felt in the championship. Mr. Shakeel Ahmed, a veteran oarsman and founder of Bengal water sports expressed his views. He spoke about how apart from the 75,000 students belonging to as many as 100 schools in West Bengal, there would be more than one lakh and fifty thousand students from other states like Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh who would also take part in the indoor rowing championships. He highlighted that preliminary rounds in different levels would be conducted and by this grass root levels would be reached. Both boys as well as girls could take part in this competition first at the district level and then at the state level. Group 1 would have boys and girls under the age of 12, group 2 would have under- 15 children and group C would have children under the age of 18. There would be grand finale on 2nd December 2018 and all the state level winners plus those from other nations would join this finale.
